I have one gripe that I describe below. I realize it's not a big deal, but it's a big deal to me so I rant about it here. But before you read that, keep in mind that everything else about this box so far has been perfection.

My one gripe is something that many people would not care about, but it is a problem that should be easy to avoid or fix and yet it exists. When you create a Disk Group or a Volume, it is automatically named by the box Volume 1 for example. The next one is automatically named with the next number Volume 2. The name is based on the lowest number not already taken, so if a Volume or Disk Group is removed then the next one you make will take its name.

You cannot select the name or rename after the fact. The defense I've heard for this online is that the end user never sees those names so it doesn't matter.

Well I see them every day and it matters to me. I have to decide what gets copied, backed up, or deleted, and it would be nice if my groups and volumes could have names that make sense.

As a result of things being created as blank disks were obtained and data was migrated, I have ended up with Disk Group 1 containing Volume 2, and Disk Group 2 containing Volume 1. When it's possible to wipe out an entire company's data if you get confused, having this kind of situation is not helpful. I think part of what makes it so frustrating is the fact that they got so many other things right pretty much all of them that I can't believe that this detail is not better.

I expect this will eventually be remedied and at that time I'll add that star back. If you're not a picky little baby like me, this thing is perfect. If you are like me, then it's only almost perfect.

I bought another and it came with DSM 6, which resolves the problem I complained about above. It has a lot of other improvements, but maybe a few slowdowns. It's hard to compare because I am using two different devices.

I'll update with when I upgrade the original DiskStation. Bumping this up from 4 to 5 stars. So ya this unit has the Intel Atom C processor line that is causing tons of problems for hardware manufacturers. Intel has acknowledged the issue as a clock flaw that under high use conditions exactly what you have with a NAS will result in accelerated circuit degradation leading to permanent system board failure.

This failure should not result in data loss. Synology has also acknowledged this issue as of Feb 18, Can't post external link Now you might not want to buy one for a bit till existing inventory old version is cleared out.

I purchased my unit on Sept 4, and it failed today due to the Intel issue. My support experience was excellent so far. If have any issues with the replacement or experience data loss I will update this review. In the end I absolutely love this NAS and hope that my replacement unit has the updated hardware.

Worked great for the first 16 months. Then It started to shut down randomly without any warning.
